Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to see an exercise physiologist at Scottvale?

Not necessarily. You can book directly as a private client without a referral. However, if you’re accessing exercise physiology through Medicare (under a Chronic Disease Management Plan), DVA, or WorkCover QLD, you will need a referral from your GP. NDIS clients do not require a referral if sessions are part of their approved plan.

Is exercise physiology covered by private health or Medicare?

Yes. Many private health insurance policies with extras cover include exercise physiology. If you have a Chronic Disease Management Plan (CDMP) from your GP, you may also be eligible for Medicare rebates for up to five sessions per calendar year. Additionally, funding is available for eligible clients through WorkCover QLD, DVA, and NDIS.

How is exercise physiology different from personal training?

Exercise physiologists are university-trained Allied Health professionals with a clinical focus. Unlike personal trainers, they specialise in using exercise as a tool to manage and treat chronic illnesses, injuries, and physical conditions. They work with clients who have complex needs and create safe, medically-informed programs tailored to long-term rehabilitation and health outcomes.

Can NDIS participants access exercise physiology?

Absolutely. Scottvale Health Club is an NDIS-registered provider, and our exercise physiologists have extensive experience working with individuals under all types of NDIS plans (self-, plan-, and agency-managed). We develop movement programs focused on improving strength, function, independence, and community participation.

What conditions does exercise physiology help with?

Exercise physiology can help manage and improve a wide range of physical and metabolic conditions, including:

  • Type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes
  • Heart disease and high blood pressure
  • Arthritis and osteoporosis
  • Obesity and metabolic syndrome
  • Mental health conditions like depression and anxiety
  • Chronic pain, fibromyalgia, and fatigue
  • Neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s and MS
  • Post-operative and post-injury rehabilitation
What can I expect in my first session?

Your first session will involve a detailed assessment of your health history, physical abilities, lifestyle factors, and goals. We may conduct basic movement tests to assess balance, flexibility, strength, and cardiovascular fitness. From there, we develop a personalised program that is safe, effective, and achievable, with progress reviewed regularly.

Can exercise physiology help with mental health?

Yes. Research shows that structured physical activity can have significant benefits for people with mental health conditions, including reduced symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. Our team takes a compassionate, supportive approach, creating exercise plans that boost both physical and emotional well being in a non-judgmental, encouraging environment.
